ACIM Workbook Lesson 6
I am upset because I see something that is not there.
W-pI.6.1. The exercises with this idea are very similar to the preceding ones. 2 Again, it is necessary to name both the form of upset (anger, fear, worry, depression and so on) and the perceived source very specifically for any application of the idea. 3 For example:
4 I am angry at _____ because I see something that is not there.
5 I am worried about _____ because I see something that is not there.
W-pI.6.2. Today’s idea is useful for application to anything that seems to upset you, and can profitably be used throughout the day for that purpose. 2 However, the three or four practice periods which are required should be preceded by a minute or so of mind searching, as before, and the application of the idea to each upsetting thought uncovered in the search.
W-pI.6.3. Again, if you resist applying the idea to some upsetting thoughts more than to others, remind yourself of the two cautions stated in the previous lesson:
2 There are no small upsets. 3 They are all equally disturbing to my peace of mind.
5 I cannot keep this form of upset and let the others go. 6 For the purposes of these exercises, then, I will regard them all as the same.
Initial Insight: Yesterday, Jesus asked me to work with the idea that I am never upset for the reason I think. I did that with the only upset I had at the moment. I was able to see that I thought I knew why I was upset, but that there were other reasons if I looked closer and with the Holy Spirit. Today, he wants me to consider another idea about my upset. He wants me to realize that I am upset because I see something that is not there. I see problems where none exist because I am looking out at the world as if it is real and the cause of my upset. If I have a problem, the problem is in my mind, not in the world.
Daily Application: The story of Myron continues to unfold. I don’t know what will happen next, but whatever happens, I have a choice about how I will react to it. Will I react with love or with fear, that is the range of my choices. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the realtor to go over how we will handle the sale of my house. I can be upset that I am not sure exactly what to say at this meeting, seeing possible pitfalls if I make poor choices. Or I can be peaceful knowing that the Holy Spirit is in my mind and will guide me through the process. If I start to waver in my decision for love over fear, I will return to the Song of Prayer which says this:
You have been told to ask the Holy Spirit for the answer to any specific problem, and that you will receive a specific answer if such is your need.
There are decisions to make here, and they must be made whether they be illusions or not.
So, I will place this whole thing in His capable hands, knowing He will give an answer that is in everyone’s best interest. Certainly, this is not something I can do.
Insights from Holy Spirit: As I have advised you many times, keep your mind in the present moment. You will be tempted to try to guess what is going to happen as a result of your choices tomorrow, and you will be tempted to try to work out what you should do based on what has happened to you in the past and what you learned in the past. Neither the past nor the future is here now and so they do not exist. Only what is here now exists.
When you and I talk, your mind is at peace because you are with me here now and no place else. You can always be at peace if you recognize that we are always together. I am part of your mind now so we cannot be apart. You have learned to trust me, and that trust will help you to stay peaceful now even as your ego mind strives to make decisions on its own based on the small bit of information it has at its disposal. Keep talking to me, my friend, not to the ego. You are doing really well with this entire situation. Even when you were temporarily confused you knew where to turn and you knew it would ultimately be fine no matter what happened.
Gratitude: I am always grateful to You, Holy Spirit and for God for placing You in my mind.
