Lesson 148

My mind holds only what I think with God.

(135) If I defend myself I am attacked.

(136) Sickness is a defense against the truth.

What comes to mind as I read these lessons is that we believe we separated from God. We believe that we changed the Will of God and became something He did not create. We are wrong. This did not happen. But because we are creators, our desires take form and it seems we have succeeded at the impossible. We dream we are bodies and bodies that are vulnerable and need our constant protection. We dream that being separate from God, we are on our own and must constantly plan for an uncertain future. None of this is true but because we decided to believe in it, it is true for us. This is what we are to awaken from.

What Am I?

Even stranger is the belief we must protect our sick illusion from God. This pathetic image we made to take the place of our own glorious Self is under constant threat of being unveiled. One of my favorite lessons says this about what I am.

I am God’s Son, complete and healed and whole, shining in the reflection of His Love. ²In me is His creation sanctified and guaranteed eternal life. ³In me is love perfected, fear impossible, and joy established without opposite. ⁴I am the holy home of God Himself. ⁵I am the Heaven where His Love resides. ⁶I am His holy Sinlessness Itself, for in my purity abides His Own. (ACIM, W-pII.14.1:1-6)

This is what I am defending against in an effort to keep my supposed specialness intact. It is so insane that I can hardly believe it and yet, this is what we do. I am the holy home of God Himself. But it seems I prefer to be the weak and vulnerable body that is the home of the ego instead, marching steadily and unavoidably to death.

Secret Magic Wands

Sickness is a defense against the truth of What I am. And sickness doesn’t just happen, it is a choice I make.

Defenses are not unintentional, nor are they made without awareness. ²They are secret, magic wands you wave when truth appears to threaten what you would believe. (ACIM, W-136.3:1-2)

Can you believe this? We deliberately hide the truth from ourselves even though it means suffering sickness, depression, fear and unrelenting guilt. We do this even though it means the body suffers pain and sickness and inevitably death. But now is the time that we choose to awaken from this nightmare. Now is the time that we accept our true nature and return Home.

We are not small helpless victims destined to live eternally in illusions. We are the Sons of God deciding to end this farce. Yes, it seems to take time and is ridiculously frustrating at times, but we are doing it. At first, it seems we must look at an endless parade of senseless thoughts to be forgiven. We look at them with the Holy Spirit so that they can be undone for us. But eventually we discover that it is not endless.

Thoughts, Beliefs, One Problem

Here is what I discovered. It becomes obvious that these thoughts fall under a few beliefs such as lack and loss, victimhood, self-loathing, and not being safe. So, I work on those beliefs. If I am afraid that someone I know and love is sick, I know it is just another example of the belief in loss. If I am worried about not have enough money or that I don’t have friends, that is just another example of the belief in lack. I forgive those beliefs. It is the belief in self-loathing or unworthiness that makes me think I need to defend my status in the world. I forgive that belief.

Eventually, there is another shift in which we come to understand that there is actually only one problem and one solution. Every problem we have ever had or will have is the effect of believing we are separated from God. The solution is to accept that we are not. This will solve all problems and relieve us of all suffering. And we are all of us destined to make this shift.

If You Want to Be Different

How we do it is not something we can change, but when we do it is up to us. Now would be a good time, right? But we can take all the time we need to make that final decision. Jesus says this.

³If you want to be like me I will help you, knowing that we are alike. ⁴If you want to be different, I will wait until you change your mind. (ACIM, T-8.IV.6:3-4)

I want very much to return Home. I am tired of the suffering.

⁷Perception is a continual process of accepting and rejecting, organizing and reorganizing, shifting and changing. ⁸Evaluation is an essential part of perception, because judgments are necessary in order to select.

(ACIM, T-3.V.7:7-8)

It exhausts me just to think of it. I can have All There Is. I can have Knowledge in which there is nothing to select and nothing to evaluate. Knowledge doesn’t have one way of seeing it and another way of seeing it. It just Is. How peaceful that will be when I am aware only of the mind that thinks with God. I am willing to do the work needed until that happens. I will do it with total dedication because my desire for it is nearly total now.
