ACIM Daily Lesson 48

Lesson 48

There is nothing to fear.

1. The idea for today simply states a fact. ²It is not a fact to those who believe in illusions, but illusions are not facts. ³In truth there is nothing to fear. ⁴It is very easy to recognize this. ⁵But it is very difficult to recognize it for those who want illusions to be true.

I am going to repeat what I said in yesterday’s lesson because it is the reason I have nothing to fear.

²There is no world! ³This is the central thought the course attempts to teach. (ACIM, W-132.6:2-3). Since there is no world outside our minds, there are no bodies. At no single instant does the body exist at all. (ACIM, T-18.VII.3:1). Since the body does not exist, I cannot be in the body. The Christ in you inhabits not a body. ²Yet He is in you. ³And thus it must be that you are not within a body. (ACIM, T-25.in.1:1-3) This means that I am eternally safe in the Mind of God.

Each time I give into a fear thought and accept it as true, I am choosing to believe in illusions rather than the truth. It is important for me that I want illusions to be true in order for me to change my mind about that. It seems insane to deliberately choose illusions over the reality of what I am. And I would be right to call it insane. Jesus often does. The only way we are going to wake up from this dream of separation is to accept our part in choosing it so that we can choose again.

The Practice

2. Today’s practice periods will be very short, very simple and very frequent. ²Merely repeat the idea as often as possible. ³You can use it with your eyes open at any time and in any situation. ⁴It is strongly recommended, however, that you take a minute or so whenever possible to close your eyes and repeat the idea slowly to yourself several times. ⁵It is particularly important that you use the idea immediately, should anything disturb your peace of mind.

3. The presence of fear is a sure sign that you are trusting in your own strength. ²The awareness that there is nothing to fear shows that somewhere in your mind, though not necessarily in a place you recognize as yet, you have remembered God, and let His strength take the place of your weakness. ³The instant you are willing to do this there is indeed nothing to fear.

Sometimes our fear thoughts seem insignificant. For instance, this morning I was trying to get the lesson finished and posted before my first Zoom meeting. Every so often, I would glance at the clock and feel a little surge of adrenaline. That was fear. But because I know that there is an alternative response, I would rest a moment in God before going on. This is my way of connecting with the strength of God in me. As soon as I did this, I was at peace and I continued the lesson in peace.

It would seem that this was just a little thing, barely lasting a moment. But if I ignored this momentary lapse into fear, I would be inviting the ego into my life. Before you know it, I would start to feel the weight of all that unacknowledged fear. I no longer want illusions to be true so I no longer allow fear thoughts to go unquestioned. I will not say that I am without fear, but I can say that I will always choose the strength of God when I notice fear thoughts.
