My sinlessness protects me from all harm.

Lesson 337

My sinlessness protects me from all harm.

1. My sinlessness ensures me perfect peace, eternal safety, everlasting love, freedom forever from all thought of loss; complete deliverance from suffering. ²And only happiness can be my state, for only happiness is given me. ³What must I do to know all this is mine? ⁴I must accept Atonement for myself, and nothing more. ⁵God has already done all things that need be done. ⁶And I must learn I need do nothing of myself, for I need but accept my Self, my sinlessness, created for me, now already mine, to feel God’s Love protecting me from harm, to understand my Father loves His Son; to know I am the Son my Father loves.

2. You Who created me in sinlessness are not mistaken about what I am. ²I was mistaken when I thought I sinned, but I accept Atonement for myself. ³Father, my dream is ended now. ⁴Amen.

I am sinless because I was created sinless.

Nothing can change this fact. Because I am sinless, I cannot suffer in any way. I seem to be lost in a dream world in which I suffer, but the way out is available to me. In order to know me as sinless and thus to be happy, I only need to accept the Atonement for myself. Accepting the Atonement means that I forgive myself. This is God’s plan for our salvation. It is beautifully simple and guaranteed to work.

This is so perfect! I need do nothing to make myself sinless. The only thing I need to do is to accept my sinlessness as fact. Because we believe in the world we made, it might, at first, appear difficult to make this shift. I make it easier by changing my mind one thought at a time and then one belief at a time. In this way, I am gently but consistently instructing the mind to accept my sinlessness. Would God create sin? No? Then we cannot be sinful. Anything that suggests otherwise is an illusion.

I am reminded of this from the Text. ⁴The Kingdom of Heaven is you. ⁵What else but you did the Creator create, and what else but you is His Kingdom? (ACIM, T-4.III.1:4-5) This is what we are, the Kingdom of Heaven. We can live from that knowledge even while we are experiencing the world. It is being in the world but not of the world. To clarify, all that we need to do is to notice our mistaken ideas and choose to release them. It is only those ideas that obscure the truth from our awareness.

This is so simple.

We think we sinned and are guilty. Because we do, we expect punishment and thus are drawn to suffering. It is not true that we ever sinned or that sin is even possible for us except in dreams of lives separate from God. The solution to this is to accept that we are innocent and could be nothing else. All of us, without exception. There is nothing else we need do.

We are so certain of our guilt that we see it in many forms. Here is an example. I used to think I needed my children to love and respect me. That was the belief in guilt. I felt guilty enough to need proof that I was OK. When I didn’t feel loved and respected by them, the underlying belief was that my children were guilty of not giving me what I thought I desperately needed.

The solution was to stop using my children to prop up my sad little story of unworthiness. Eventually, through a strong desire to be free, I learned another way. I gave the belief I was unworthy to the Holy Spirit. I let my mind be purified of the belief in my guilt. Without the belief I was guilty, I could free my children to live their lives however they wanted to. That is love.

My children didn’t need anyone to forgive them. They were never guilty. Nor was I. I just opened my mind to the truth that guilt is not real, no matter what stories we make up to support the belief that it is. I wasn’t made innocent; I was already innocent. And I didn’t withdraw guilt from my children; I withdrew my belief in their guilt. They, like me, were always innocent. We are as God created us.

From Lesson 337, I learned that all pain I experienced came from the idea that I was sinful. I thought I sinned when I separated from God. If I sinned against God, I was either being punished or was going to be punished. I thought I sinned every day.

That is why I lived a life in constant fear and uncertainty. All of this could have been changed by simply realizing that I had done nothing wrong. There was nothing for me to do except accept the truth. All else is done for me. And to a great degree, it has been done through the practice of A Course in Miracles.

My only job is to recognize my errors and allow them to be corrected. It is in this way that I undo what I made to take the place of All There Is. It is a laughable situation when I think about it. How could it possibly be that I could make something outside of All There Is? I could play around with an impossible concept, and that is what I did. It became fearful only when I began to believe in my own game.

I am willing to back out of this mess.

I made it, and I am willing to release it. If I need to do it one thought at a time for a while, that is ok. I will do it that way. I will remind myself frequently that I am sinless and there is nothing I can do that will change this. My fear is causeless.

I was sitting here getting ready to work on the computer when an old memory popped up in my mind. It was a memory of me doing something that felt foolish to me. It was a little thing of no importance, but for a moment, I felt embarrassed all over again and wished I had not done it.

My thought was that I am such an idiot. I stopped myself and backed up for a moment giving myself time to reconsider. Holding onto this grievance against myself keeps me boxed into the idea that I am less than others. To be “less than,” I must be “separated from.”

Holding onto these beliefs keeps the separation story going and keeps me from experiencing my Divinity. I notice that fear tells me I need to hold onto this bad feeling and this embarrassing memory because that memory is what keeps me from repeating my mistakes. The Holy Spirit tells me that it is judgment that holds me captive to this kind of feeling and that allowing Him to purify my mind is how I escape from it. Fear is a liar, and I am learning not to listen to it.

I feel a different emphasis when I read this lesson today. Jesus is explaining to me what it means that I need do nothing. I always wondered how he could say that in the middle of a book the length of the Course. Not to mention 365 lessons. A Course in Miracles is full of things I am to do. So what was he talking about when he said that I need do nothing?

In this lesson, Jesus makes it clear that my only job is to accept what has already been given. I am so loved and so perfect. All I need to do is sit still a moment and open my heart to this, and I am washed in His love. All my cares and concerns are a distant memory in that moment. I did nothing to have that experience other than to accept it.

All the other stuff, the pages and pages of reading and the lessons done endlessly and the journaling, the additional reading, the teachers, the forgiveness processes, all of it are for one purpose only. All of it is provided to convince me to sit still for a moment and accept what has always been and always will be. It is not even really my job to let go of guilt but to simply accept that there is no guilt to let go of.

I am beginning to understand what it means that I need do nothing.

Through the study of A Course in Miracles, I have practiced the idea that I could let go of guilty thoughts and guilty feelings and that I want to. But in the end, I need do nothing about guilt because there never was guilt. The processes I used to let go of guilt just got me healthy enough to accept my innocence. All of it, the belief in fear and suffering and death are no more real than guilt.

I practice letting these apparent happenings, these persistent thoughts, these desires to experience something not-God be healed. I do it one situation at a time, but really I am just preparing my mind to accept that God loves me and that I abide in God. It’s funny, really. I do so much – years of work – and I know the work was necessary, but all along, it just brings me right back to I need do nothing. It’s a cosmic joke I am playing on myself.
