Lesson 321

Father, my freedom is in You alone.

1. I did not understand what made me free, nor what my freedom is, nor where to look to find it. ²Father, I have searched in vain until I heard Your Voice directing me. ³Now I would guide myself no more. ⁴For I have neither made nor understood the way to find my freedom. ⁵But I trust in You. ⁶You Who endowed me with my freedom as Your holy Son will not be lost to me. ⁷Your Voice directs me, and the way to You is opening and clear to me at last. ⁸Father, my freedom is in You alone. ⁹Father, it is my will that I return.

2. Today we answer for the world, which will be freed along with us. ²How glad are we to find our freedom through the certain way our Father has established. ³And how sure is all the world’s salvation, when we learn our freedom can be found in God alone.

I’ve certainly found this to be true.

And it is a common idea repeated many times and in many ways throughout the Course. We typically begin by believing we can find our own way to salvation through what we learn in the world. When that fails us entirely, we give up our way and desire help. This is typically when A Course in Miracles or some other non-dual teaching shows up in our life.

It was A Course in Miracles for me, and it helped me to purify my thoughts so that I could see what was always within me but obstructed up until now. What I discovered is that I had a part to play in my awakening, but it was a relatively minor role. I had to want to awaken and I had to be willing to give up all that was not taking me toward awakening.

This unfolded for me as a series of practices that boiled down to mind-watching and releasing what I found there to be purified or removed. It wasn’t hard, but it sometimes felt hard because I struggled against myself. I was conflicted about giving up some of those destructive beliefs. Once I made a decision, though, it was taken care of for me.

There is so much I don’t remember, so much I don’t understand.

Fortunately, reality doesn’t depend on my understanding. As well, I don’t need to understand reality in order to return to it. I have been given the Holy Spirit, the Light of Truth, to guide me. People, particularly new students, often ask me how to hear the Holy Spirit and what it sounds like to me.

I don’t hear an audible voice, but I know someone who does. For me, it comes in more than one way. Especially in the beginning, it came as thoughts. For instance, I would read the lesson and ask for clarity. Then I would start writing whatever came into my mind. I go back over those early entries in my journals, and I am amazed at some of those writings. They contained wisdom that was not mine at that time.

It wasn’t consistent at first. I would ask for words of advice, and sometimes I would get it wrong. Eventually, I realized that the reason for this confusion was that I had a preferred answer in my mind. The Holy Spirit can’t give me something new if I think I already know. But those times were not wasted. Just trying to hear the Voice strengthened my ability to do so.

You could think of it as lifting weights to build muscle. When you first begin, you will not be able to lift too much, and when you try to add weight, you might not do well. However, each time you try, you get stronger. This is the way it works with developing the ability to hear the Holy Spirit, too.

Another way I hear Him is through feelings.

An example would be if I was anxious about a situation and asked the Holy Spirit to heal my mind. I might receive true thoughts that led me to another way to see things. Sometimes though, I would just go from anxiety to peace. It would be like I was smothering in darkness, and suddenly someone shone a bright light. The darkness was just gone. This is how it feels to be anxious and then, miraculously, to be at peace. Peace is the Holy Spirit’s answer to my request for healing.

Sometimes I am answered with a prompt or a nudge. This might happen when I am confused about something, not knowing which way to turn, sometimes literally. An example of this happened when I was working. I was late for an appointment with a new customer because I was lost. So what I did was to ask the Holy Spirit for help, and I just went the way that I was prompted to go. I got there quickly and easily.

One time, I was making my rounds seeing customers in a certain order. I did it this way so that my day would allow the most visits in the least amount of time. Suddenly I felt strongly that I should visit a certain customer. It was possible but was very much out of the way. However, I learned to pay attention to these nudges. It turned out the customer really needed my help, and I was Johnny on the spot. I’ve had many such prompts, some asked for and some occurring simply because my mind is open to them.

There are many ways to receive an answer.

I know people who receive visions and some who get their answers in colors that are meaningful to them. Lots of people, myself included, will ask for an answer and receive it later through a book they read or a show they watch. The Holy Spirit wants to communicate with us and will do so in a way we can recognize. All we need to do is ask with an open mind and pay attention to the answer.

If you are having trouble fully developing a relationship with the Holy Spirit, maybe I could help. I facilitate a course through Pathways of Light called Accepting Holy Spirit’s Help which I think is very helpful. Click here to learn more about it. Pathways of light also has a self-study course that many people have found helpful. Listen and Receive is very helpful in developing the skill of communicating with the Holy Spirit.

A Message From Spirit

I received this message from Holy Spirit a few years ago.

Notice your thoughts, and pay attention to your feelings. Do not deny or repress. Listen for My Voice. Bring Me your confused thoughts. Give me your willingness. I am in your mind, closer than a thought. I am very much a part of you. The road you walk now is very straight, and when you think of it, you know this is true. Do not look back, and do not look forward. Be with Me here and now. These are the steps that bring you home. Because you desire to walk this straight and narrow path, all helpful experiences will be placed before you. Do not mistake them for errors or obstructions, and do not try to step around them. Look at each one with Me, and let Me show you how to use them for your Awakening.

Regina’s Tips

It is an interesting dilemma we find ourselves in. While we are attempting to realize the ultimate truth, we also need to walk in that direction from where we are. When we walk in the direction of awakening, awakening comes to greet us. That is the meaning of the story of the prodigal son…

One very important sentence in today’s lesson is this:

Now I would guide myself no more.

If we want to make the journey from “the dream of sin and guilt” to the real world, and ultimately to truth, we must abandon the ego as our guide. This takes a lot of practice because we see the ego’s ideas as our ideas, and we are much more attached to our ego self than most of us would like to think.

Also, as long as we are within ego-consciousness, we need a guide. We cannot go without a guide at this level because this level is script. A script must guide. There is no state at this level of consciousness that is scriptless.

However, we do have two scripts to choose from—that is, two guides to choose from: the ego, which seems to be our self or the spiritual intuition that guides from Christ-consciousness.

Obviously, if awakening is our goal, spiritual intuition is the guide that we want to choose. That means that we need to learn to listen to it instead of our self. Ultimately, we need to merge with it as our Self.

My Thoughts

The two scripts that Regina mentions are just another way of saying ego or Holy Spirit. I have mentioned this before. There are many versions of our scripts, and the one we live at any moment depends on which part of the mind we use to make our decisions. If we make the right mind, that is, the Holy Spirit as our partner in choosing, we live the corrected script.

If we go back to using our ego mind, we live a different version of our script, a more chaotic version that causes suffering. But f we watch how we feel and what we think, we will notice right off when we slip back into ego and correct our course quickly.
